Blue Valentine is a drama about a dissolving marriage. Blue Valentine, though resisting melodrama and miserabilism, is deeply depressing and, in the manner of effective tragedies, increasingly so with further reflection. The film is relatively conventional in its style, but unusual in its attention to realism and emotion.
